Chargers Punch Ticket to Elite 8 with 66–55 Road Playoff Win at Moorpark
The win sends the Chargers back to the 3C2A Elite 8 for the second time in three seasons
MOORPARK, CA - Cypress College women's basketball is Elite 8 bound once again. The Chargers rode a dominant first three quarters and clutch shot-making from their backcourt to a 66–55 playoff victory over Moorpark on Saturday night at Raider Pavilion, securing a spot in the 3C2A State Championship Tournament at College of the Sequoias.
The decisive stretch came in the third quarter, when Cypress turned a 10-point halftime advantage into a commanding 58–39 lead heading into the fourth. After taking a 37–27 edge at the break, the Chargers outscored Moorpark 21–12 in the third behind efficient offense and disciplined defense, building a cushion that proved too much for the Raiders' late surge to overcome.
Sophomore guard Mariah Henderson set the tone offensively, pouring in a game-high 20 points for Cypress on 8-of-17 shooting, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. She attacked the glass as well, adding seven rebounds—three on the offensive end—to keep possessions alive. Marina Leiva provided a potent second scoring punch with 18 points on a sharp 7-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range, stretching Moorpark's defense and punishing every lapse in coverage.
Running the show was playmaker Kaylene Vivo, who orchestrated the Chargers' attack with poise and vision. Vivo finished with 10 assists to go with five points, repeatedly finding Henderson, Leiva and her teammates in rhythm. Cypress' ball movement showed in the box score: the Chargers went 25-for-54 from the field (46.3%) and an eye-popping 11-for-17 from 3-point distance (64.7%), turning crisp perimeter execution into a steady stream of quality looks.
UP NEXT: Cypress will travel to College of the Sequoias for the 3C2A State Tournament starting Thursday, March 12.
