Chargers with Runner-Up Finish in the OEC
CYPRESS, CA — Cypress College softball (27-13, 14-7 OEC) wrapped up its final Orange Empire Conference series of the regular season against the Orange Coast Pirates (19-20, 13-8 OEC), securing a runner-up finish in the OEC.
Game 1: Orange Coast 13, Cypress 5
Cypress opened the series by jumping out with early momentum, plating two runs in the third and three in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. However, Orange Coast responded with a big offensive surge, scoring five runs in the third and six more in the fifth to pull away for the win.
Offensively, Lynsey Arostigue led the Chargers with a home run and three RBIs, while Isabella Rodriguez added two doubles and an RBI. Despite drawing five walks and capitalizing on early opportunities, Cypress was limited to just four hits in the contest.
Game 2: Orange Coast 13, Cypress 8
The Chargers came out swinging in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding to their lead throughout the early innings. Cypress held an 8-6 advantage heading into the later frames, but Orange Coast rallied with a seven-run sixth inning to secure the comeback victory.
Cypress totaled nine hits in the game, with Isabella Rodriguez scoring three runs and Lynsey Arostigue collecting two hits and an RBI. Charlize Callaghan drove in two runs, while Madylyn Wynia and Peyton Clark also contributed RBIs in the effort.
Game 3: Cypress 6, Orange Coast 1
After a slow start, Cypress broke through with a four-run fifth inning and never looked back.
Laila Nunez powered the offense with a home run and scored three runs, while Peyton Clark added a two-RBI performance. Alina Argueta contributed with a triple and an RBI, helping fuel the Chargers' balanced attack.
The breakthrough inning showcased the middle of Cypress' lineup. Peyton Clark lined a two-run double to left field, bringing home Isabella Rodriguez and Laila Nunez for a 3-1 advantage. Soon after, Alina Argueta stretched the lead with a run-scoring triple to right-center, plating Clark, and Argueta later came home on a wild pitch to cap the four-run surge. That sequence gave the Chargers all the separation they needed and stood as the key moment of the afternoon.
Cypress first got on the board in the bottom of the third when Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Nunez to score for a 1-0 lead. Orange Coast answered in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left by Kayla Vargas, briefly leveling the score at 1-1. The Chargers responded with poise, then took control one inning later with their most productive frame of the game.
Nunez delivered another spark in the bottom of the sixth, racing around for an inside-the-park home run that pushed the margin to 6-1. She finished with two hits, three runs scored, a walk and the inside-the-park homer, making her one of the clear standouts in the regular-season finale. Clark added a hit, two RBIs and a walk, while Argueta contributed a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Rodriguez also played an important role in the offense, driving in the game's first run and later scoring during the fifth-inning rally.
