Chargers Open SoCal Regional Play With Rematch at Allan Hancock
Chargers Men's Basketball Looks Towards Postseason
SANTA MARIA, CA - Cypress College Men's Basketball begins its postseason road Wednesday night with a familiar opponent. The No. 18 seed Chargers will travel to Santa Maria to face No. 15 seed Allan Hancock College in the first round of the 3C2A Men's Basketball SoCal Regionals, with the winner advancing to face No. 2 seed Citrus College on Saturday in Glendora.
Cypress heads into the regional with a 16-12 record, securing fourth place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 7-7 finish. Allan Hancock has secured a victory against the Chargers this season by claiming a 65-58 win during their traditional Holiday Classic event.
The Chargers will again lean on standout forward Michael Wright, the team's leading scorer and rebounder and one of the top performers in the OEC this season. Wright averaged 17.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game and was recently named first-team all-conference, giving Cypress a go-to option in a win-or-go-home setting. His ability to control the glass and generate efficient offense inside will be central to Cypress' efforts to flip the script against the Bulldogs.
In the backcourt, point guard Zack Moritz provides stability and shot-making for the Chargers. Moritz finished No. 3 in the conference in assists with 83 and ranked No. 5 in 3-point percentage at 39.0, earning second-team all-conference honors. His decision-making against Allan Hancock's perimeter pressure and his ability to create quality looks for Wright and the rest of the lineup will be critical in a regional game that figures to hinge on half-court execution and late-possession poise.
Cypress also has an emerging scoring option in guard Amaan Zavahir, who has delivered a strong stretch of form leading into the postseason. Over the Chargers' last three games, Zavahir posted 15 points against Saddleback, 12 at Riverside and 16 versus Santa Ana, shooting efficiently from the field and from beyond the arc during that span.
With a trip to Citrus College on the line and only three regional rounds separating teams from the 3C2A Elite Eight, Wednesday's contest offers Cypress both a chance at redemption and an opportunity to extend a solid season.
