Cypress Edges IVC in Thrilling 78–76 Finish
Chargers defeat the Irvine Valley Lasers, 78-76
CYPRESS, CA — The Cypress College Chargers pulled out a thrilling 78–76 win over Irvine Valley College on Friday night, surviving a physical Orange Empire Conference battle that featured momentum swings, efficient shooting, and aggressive play on both ends of the floor.
The Lasers came out sharp offensively in the opening half, but Cypress stayed within striking distance despite early shooting struggles, relying on free throws and strong interior play to keep the contest close.
The Chargers turned the tide in the second half with a dominant offensive performance, shooting 61.5 percent from the floor after the break. Cypress attacked the paint with confidence and moved the ball effectively, outscoring Irvine Valley 49–45 in the final 20 minutes to reclaim the lead.
Defensively, Cypress capitalized on Irvine Valley turnovers, converting them into 18 points while limiting second-chance opportunities. The Chargers also controlled the interior, finishing with a 24–14 advantage in points in the paint and outscoring the Lasers 16–8 in bench points.
Jack Rivera led the team with 19 points and 5 rebounds. Rivera ended the night with 5 three pointers. Michael Wright made waves on both sides of the court with a total of 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Zach Mortiz was aggressive on both ends of the court ending the game with 14 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.
IVC remained within striking distance late behind strong shooting performances, but Cypress answered with timely baskets and key defensive stops down the stretch to secure the two-point victory.
