Chargers Women Showcase Depth in Backstroke and Diving at OEC Opener
Chargers Open OEC Season With Fourth-Place Finish Behind Strong Wins in Backstroke, IM and Diving
CYPRESS, CA - The Cypress College women's swim and dive team delivered a competitive showing in the opening Orange Empire Conference meet, scoring 250 points to place sixth overall. The Chargers accounted for 13.6 percent of the meet's total scoring, highlighting their depth across both individual and relay events.
Diving proved to be a major strength for Cypress. Joanna Cruz competed in both springboard events, with a score of 168.531 in the 1-meter and the 3-meter with a 134.181. Cruz finished as the Chargers' top female scorer, compiling 42 points between her two diving victories and a swim entry in the 50-yard freestyle. Cruz also contributed in the sprint freestyle, posting a 29.94 in the 50-yard freestyle to complement her dominant diving performance.
In the pool, Cypress found consistent success in the backstroke and individual medley events. Chantee Nguyen dominated the backstroke races, sweeping both events in impressive fashion. She captured the 100-yard backstroke in 59.08 and followed with a win in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.48 as Nguyen totaled 40 points in just two races.
Jasmine Liu added another individual victory for the Chargers, winning the 100-yard individual medley in 1:02.32. She also placed second in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:18.12, finishing with 37 points across her two events and solidifying Cypress' strength in the middle-distance IM races.
