Chargers Drop Conference Opener to Golden West, 6–22
Cypress Falls to Golden West in first conference matchup of the season
CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's water polo team opened conference play against the Golden West Rustlers and fell 22–6 on Wednesday at home.
Golden West set the tone early with two quick goals in the opening minute. Cypress answered when Joanna Cruz netted the team's first goal to cut the deficit to 6–1, but the Rustlers' swift counterattacks kept pressure on the Chargers throughout the match.
In the second quarter, Jillian Van Gemert sparked the offense with a backhand strike from center, adding two steals and drawing three ejections. Despite creating opportunities, Cypress missed key penalty shots and power plays and trailed 9–2 at halftime.
Golden West extended its lead to 16–3 in the third before Analyn Farro scored off a Cruz assist. Goalkeeper Nince Abundis made several stops, but the Rustlers continued to capitalize on fast breaks.
Cypress showed late determination in the fourth quarter with goals from Cruz and Farro, plus a penalty conversion by Van Gemert, but Golden West's relentless pace sealed the 22–6 result.
