Chargers Women's Water Polo Starts Off Mini Tournament Strong
CYPRESS, CA - The Cypress Chargers women's water polo team hosted the Cypress Tournament with a number of other schools participating. The schools included East Los Angeles College, Southwestern, Santa Monica, and Chaffey. Cypress would go on to have a record of 2-0.
Game 1 - Cypress vs East Los Angeles (W, 17-7)
The Cypress College women's water polo team delivered a commanding performance on both ends of the pool, defeating East Los Angeles College 17–7 in their first tournament matchup of the day.
Cypress jumped out early, opening the first period with crisp ball movement and stifling defense. Joanna Cruz set the tone with an early goal off a feed from Mikaela Prieto, while Isabelle Neri and Analyn Farro each found the back of the net to help the Chargers build a 5–1 lead after one. Goalie Nince Abundis anchored the defense with a key save to close the quarter.
The second period belonged to the Chargers. Violet Trejo scored first, and Cruz continued her hot hand with a pair of goals despite heavy defensive pressure. Farro and Ivy Olivas capitalized on quick outlet passes from Prieto to stretch the lead to 10–1. Trejo floated in another goal late, sending Cypress into halftime up 12–1.
Kaylyn Barnett buried a penalty shot in the third before Olivas added another. Farro stayed aggressive in the final frame, scoring twice more, while Trejo capped her strong outing with her third goal of the game.
Cypress's relentless defense and balanced scoring kept ELAC on its heels all afternoon. Farro led the attack with five goals, while Cruz, Trejo, and Olivas each tallied multiple scores. Abundis recorded several key saves to keep momentum squarely with the Chargers.
With the decisive 17–7 victory, Cypress improves its early-season record and sends a clear message that the Chargers are a team to watch in the JUCO ranks.
Game 2 - Cypress vs Santa Monica (W, 24-2)
The Chargers wasted no time seizing control, building an 8–0 lead in the first quarter behind balanced scoring and relentless defense. Isabelle Neri opened the floodgates less than a minute in, followed quickly by goals from Ivy Olivas, Joanna Cruz, and Kaylyn Barnett. Cypress forced multiple turnovers and recorded key steals - including a standout takeaway by No. 18 - that fueled fast-break opportunities.
Cypress kept up the pressure in the second period, stretching the margin to 12–2 at halftime. Barnett completed a first-half hat trick, while Olivas notched her third goal and added some key assists to keep the Santa Monica defense on its heels.
The Chargers' dominance continued after the break. Cruz, Mikaela Prieto, and Analyn Farro each found the back of the net as Cypress outscored the Corsairs 3–0 in the third quarter and 6–0 in the fourth. Olivas and Barnett led the way with five goals apiece, while Prieto added three. Farro chipped in a balanced performance with three goals and four assists.
Defensively, Cypress goalkeeper Nince Abundis anchored a stingy back line, recording four saves and allowing just two late Santa Monica scores. The Chargers finished with 13 steals as a team, consistently turning defense into offense.
