Chargers Fall to Santiago Canyon in OEC Opener, 3-1
Despite multiple offensive thrusts, the Chargers lose their first game of conference play

CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's soccer team (6-2, 0-1 OEC) battled in their Orange Empire Conference opener but came up short against Santiago Canyon (6-0-2, 1-0 OEC), falling 3-1 at home on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks struck first in the 13th minute of play. The Chargers responded quickly just six minutes later off of a corner kick, capitalizing on pressure in the box to equalize the match, 1-1.
Cypress controlled much of the possession in the second half, outshooting Santiago Canyon 9-3 after halftime and creating multiple scoring opportunities. This included on goal shots from 4 different Cypress players.
The Chargers matched the Hawks with 10 total shots apiece, including five on frame, but were denied by a strong defensive effort and goalkeeping. Naomi Lee led Cypress with two shots on goal, while Peyton Dunbar and Briselda Tellez also created chances in the attack. Lee was also able to keep her team with involved with great passing in the open field. Goalkeeper Emily Peñaloza tallied two saves in the match.
Cypress will look to bounce back as conference play continues when they travel next week.
