Chargers Rally Late to Edge Golden West in 7-6 Thriller
The Chargers win game 1 of the regular season series.
CYPRESS, CA - Cypress College baseball (18-8, 5-2 OEC) rallied from an early deficit to secure a 7-6 comeback victory over Golden West (14-12, 1-6 OEC) on Tuesday afternoon.
Golden West jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added another run in the second to take early control. The Chargers responded in the third, cutting into the deficit with two runs before delivering the decisive blow in the fifth inning.
Cypress plated four runs in the fifth to take its first lead of the game, capitalizing on Golden West's defensive miscues. The Chargers also added an insurance run in the seventh.
Leading the offensive effort for Cypress was Travis Curry, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, delivering the biggest hits of the afternoon. Tyler Smith added a home run and drove in two runs while scoring twice, and Derek Gonzales contributed a 2-for-3 performance with two runs scored. Braden Ruiz also chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
On the mound, Rocky Palacio earned the win, tossing six innings while allowing four runs and striking out seven. The bullpen combination of Caden Clem, Josue Sayre, and Rudy Carlos held off Golden West down the stretch, with Carlos closing out the final innings to secure the victory.
