CYPRESS, CA – The Cypress College women's basketball program hosted the 35th Annual Lady Charger Classic over the weekend. The Chargers finished 2-1 on the weekend, falling in a tightly contested championship game to El Camino College on Sunday night, 62-60.
Cypress began the weekend with a 39-point blowout victory over Grossmont on Friday night, 86-47. The Lady Chargers followed that up with a 77-72 victory over East Los Angeles in Saturday night's semi-final, earning a rematch with the El Camino Warriors on Championship Sunday.
Cypress came out flat, as the Warriors took an early 12-4 lead. The Chargers would answer with a run to end the quarter and eventually took the lead with a long-range three-pointer from freshman Janei-Ruby Fuamatu to beat the first half buzzer, 30-27.
Both teams continued to trade baskets, as the game came down to the final possession. Cypress trailed 62-60 with less than a second remaining forcing Head Coach Margaret Mohr to draw up an inbounds play to get a quick shot from under their own basket. Sophomore forward Christa Evans got a good look on an inbounds lob, but it fell just short.
Fuamatu, along with sophomore center Hannah Avila-McArthur earned All-Tournament honors. Fuamatu had a breakout game in the tournament semi-final, pouring in a season-high 34 points before adding 17 more in the championship game. Avila-McArthur finished the tournament with 34 total points and 30 rebounds in the three-game span.
UP NEXT: the Chargers will travel to the Antelope Valley College Tournament from Dec. 14-Dec. 16.
