Chargers Dominate in Season Opener, 10-4 and 12-0

CYPRESS, CA- The Cypress softball team (2-0, 2-0 OEC) hosted Santiago Canyon (0-2, 0-2 OEC) in a double header on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers pulled two impressive wins over the Hawks that included in a 12-0 shutout win.

*The OEC softball matchups this season will consist of double headers in each meeting throughout the season*

GAME 1

Jordan Thompson (3 for 4, 3 runs, 1 RBI) ignited the Chargers offense batting lead-off and playing left field. Camryn Addimando (2 for 3, 2 RBI's, 1 run) led the team in RBI's along with Cameron Curiel (2 for 3, 2 RBI's, 1 run). Eliza Sandoval (4.0 IP, 5K) started on the mound for the Chargers and earned the win. All four standout stars for the Chargers in game one were returners from the 2020 team. Santiago Canyon right fielder, Lili Navarro (2 for 4, 2 RBI's), led the offense with a single to left field that brought in two during the third inning and was a major offensive threat batting in the three hole for the Hawks.

The Chargers started their scoring run in the bottom of the first when Jordan Thompson scored on a passed ball. Alyssa Huerta singled to center field knocking Camryn Addimando in and notching the Chargers first RBI of the season. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Thompson tripled to center field bringing in Cameron Curiel pushing the Chargers lead to 7-0. During the fifth inning, Paige Shafer and Sarah Duran scored on the same play after Cameron Curiel singled to right field and advanced to second on a throw. The Chargers won the first game of the afternoon, 10-4.

GAME 2

Emily Rush (1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 run) batted second and was on the mound for the Chargers where she threw five shutout innings and recorded three strikeouts. Alyssa Huerta (3 for 3, 2 RBI's, 2 runs) was perfect at the plate and led the game in RBI's along with Sarah Duran (1 for 2, 2 RBI's, 1 run) who hit the first triple of the season for the Chargers. 

The Chargers continued their scoring early in game two when Emily Rush singled in the bottom of the first scoring Jordan Thompson (1 for 2, 2 runs, 1 BB). Alyssa Huerta would later double in the inning followed by a triple from Sarah Duran that scored two runs. The Chargers would end the first inning with a 5-0 lead. Cypress poured it on in the 4th inning scoring six runs including a two run single by Emily Wagenbrenner (1 for 2, 2 RBI's, 2 runs). The Chargers defense was on point in game two, turning three inning ending double plays in the second, third, and fourth innings to keep the shutout in tact. Emily Rush finished the game strong striking out the final two batters to end the game in the fifth inning, 12-0. 

UP NEXT: The Chargers will take on the Hawks for another doubleheader Friday afternoon at 12:00PM and 2:30PM at Santiago Canyon College.
